The Subaru Sambar is a kei class mini truck that has been in production since the early 60’s. The first generation was based on the Subaru 360 and featured a cabover layout with a rear mounted engine behind the bed. The Sambar was unique in maintaining a rear engine layout, compared to other trucks with mid-engined cabover layouts. Since 2012, the Subaru Sambar has been based on the Daihatsu Hijet and also shares manufacturing facilities with them.
Produced throughout the 90’s the KS3 and KS4 were rear engined kei class mini trucks with similar features and functions as other kei trucks. During this time, Subaru offered many variations and features for the Sambar truck and van. The most popular version was the Sambar Classic, which offered classic styling mimicking the design of the original 360 Sambar in the 60’s. Another famous variant was the Dias wagon, which featured dual raised sunroofs, which provided an open sky view from the interior, and easily opened to let air in the cabin.
